On may 21st 1879, both Peruvian ships "Huascar" (monitor under Miguel Grau's command) and "Independencia" (ironclad under Juan Guillermo More's command) arrived at Iquique's port (Peruvian at that time) and attacked both chilean ships corvette "Esmeralda" and schooner "Covadonga" who where holding a blockade. Esmeralda, under captain Arturo Prat's command stayed at the port and held the defense (as Esmeralda was too old and slow to maneuver) while the smaller Covadonga with captain Carlos Condell went south. Peruvian ironclad Independencia started the pursuit of the Covadonga while Huascar attacked Esmeralda. Having no chance against the armored ship, captain Prat stood and gave fight until he and many of his officers and soldiers died. The Esmeralda sank after Huascar's third ram attack at noon. Prat and most part of the crew died a hero's death, and never surrendered, being remember to this day for their valor.
